Greyhound Ladies RFC v Hardwicke and Quedgeley Quins Ladies RFC, 9th September 2018

Our first game of the season took us to Hardwicke and Quedgeley Quins Ladies RFC for the beginning of National Challenge Midlands 2 South competition. We arrived with no knowledge of our opposition as they were new to our league so we were apprehensive as to how the game would turn out.
H+Q Quins, with a field of 20, kicked off the first half, where Greyhound dominated from the start with 3 tries in quick succession from Carly Whent at 13 who managed to find the right gap to score under the posts every time. With great ball positioning, Bonnie Smith converted the first 3 tries with excellent precision putting us 0-21 up. H+Q Quins fought back with grit and determination but near the end of the first half a penalty was conceded on their 5 metre line and Claire ‘Higgy’ Higginson at 1 took advantage and crashed over the try line making it 0-26, concluding the first half.
Greyhound kicked into the second half with their next try also coming from Claire ‘Higgy’ Higginson, closely followed by a try from Bonnie Smith at 12 (0-36). Natalie Hughes-Burton and Zoe Whittall (first ever game) came on just before Georgina Evans at 15 crossed the line along with a conversion from Bonnie Smith (0-43). Claire ‘Higgy’ Higginson then scored her first hat-trick of the season with Bonnie Smith’s 5th successful conversion. Then, Greyhound let their guards down giving away a penalty on their 5 metre line and H+Q Quins crossed the line for the first time. The game concluded with one more try for Bonnie Smith which was unconverted leaving the final score at 5-55.
Everyone in the team put in a great effort for the first game back and, hopefully, we should be seeing the same team next week with some new faces! Next game is at home on Sunday 16th September 3pm KO against Banbury Belles, see you there!
Stand out moments include: Molly Harrison and Charlotte Mayo-Evans flying down the wings on separate occasions showing great confidence and gaining lots of ground. Sintija Zirakas fierce tackling of any woman in her path! Natalie Hughes-Burton proving she’s more than just a flag girl (this is her preferred position) with some amazing runs, hand offs and taking massive tackles.
