Meet The Team

Director

Martin Ackery – A Lifetime in Rugby and Beyond

Born with rugby in my blood, I began my journey with the sport at the young age of 13, playing for Greyhound RFC on Sundays. Despite not receiving many passes in those early years, my dedication and passion for the game never wavered. These early experiences laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to the club and to rugby as a whole.

Coming from a family deeply rooted in Greyhound RFC’s history, I followed in my father’s footsteps, who also played for the club. My mother, a key figure as the Fixture Secretary, further strengthened my family’s close connection to the club. The Greyhound RFC has been more than a club for me—it’s been a way of life.

Primarily playing in the back row, I carved out a remarkable playing career, characterised by determination and a deep understanding of the game. Over the years, my leadership skills flourished, and I captained the team for several seasons, during which time I also won the prestigious Player of the Year award. My contributions extended beyond the pitch and I took on the role of Treasurer and I was recognised for my exceptional service, earning the Clubman of the Year accolade.

In addition to my time with Greyhound, I also proudly represented Ledbury RFC’s 1st XV, further establishing my standing in the local rugby community.

My playing career extended for decades, I last took the field in 2024, aged 52, in a game against The Barbarian mixed-services once again representing Greyhound RFC. Even in the latter stages of my career, I remain passionate about the sport, exemplifying the spirit of rugby and my playing days may not be over just yet.

Beyond rugby, I have built a successful professional career in education, teaching electrical installation at Herefordshire, Ludlow, and North Shropshire College (HLNSC). My commitment to developing the next generation extends into my  professional life as much as it does into my rugby involvement.

Most recently, I took on the role of Director at Greyhound RFC, with a vision of ensuring that the club’s family spirit and rich traditions continue to thrive for future generations. In addition to this, I have been coerced into serving as the interim Director of Rugby, a challenge I embrace with enthusiasm. My focus now is on improving the club’s overall outlook, both on and off the field, and fostering a positive environment for all players and supporters.

Throughout my  life, I have exemplified the values of hard work, loyalty, and dedication, not only within rugby but also in my professional and personal life. My enduring connection to Greyhound RFC, My leadership roles, and My passion for teaching will hopefully leave a legacy that will inspire future generations.

Andy Preedy

I have been involved with Rugby in a variety of roles for many years. I have played in several different positions (centre/scrumhalf/hooker) but settled down to playing in the backrow at number 7, I have also played for several clubs in Herefordshire, as well as the Army/Airforce stationed in the county. I have also captained the GRFC on many occasions and also captained Hereford RFC seconds for several years

I have coached rugby at several levels and enjoyed my time coaching the under 16s at Hereford RFC, which I found to be a very rewarding experience.

I have been involved at committee level in several clubs, I was club Chairmen at the Greyhound RFC for many years and a co-founder of the club, I was awarded Clubman of the Year accolade in 19 . In my early years of Rugby I was a committee member and fixture secretary at at Tupsley RFC and a member of the executive committee at Hereford RFC (when it was at Rockfield Road)

Outside of Rugby I have worked with young people for the past 40+years, working for the local authority as a youth worker and then as a youth service manager. I am also a trustee and teacher at Dinedor Outdoor Centre as well as being a Expedition Leader for Herefordshire Expedition Group (HEG ) and have led expeditions to Borneo, Thailand, Nepal and just recently to Belize. I hope to bring all this experience to the GRFC and help the club to reach its true potential.
