Greyhound Ladies took the voyage to Wellingborough on Remembrance Sunday for the next game in the league. Poppies adorned the field with a respectful 2 minutes silence held before kick off. Greyhound kicked off for the first half against a big and strong Wellingborough side, for a first half dominated by Greyhound possession. Wellingborough put up a strong and practised defence which held off a try for a long time but Greyhound made the most of the bunching from the defensive side, shipping the ball out wide for an unconverted try from Carly Phillips (8).
Wellingborough fought hard for their first (unconverted) try in the corner against a strong Greyhound defence. In the remaining time in the first half, there were a series of penalties from high tackles on both sides, with neither team gaining an advantage from them. Emma Downes (15) made a great attacking line at Wellingborough defence and managed to get through the gap for a try through the posts, which was converted by Laura Jenkins (10) to conclude the first half.
Wellingborough were the first points on the board in the second half, following a mauling ball on our 5 metre line, a ball shipped out wide to their backs and a badly times tackle resulted in a penalty try being awarded. A try quickly followed by top try scorer Carly Whent (12) from the kick off, after some misjudged play from Wellingborough, which was converted by Laura Jenkins (10). A short while later, after much injury time from Wellingborough, Carly Whent (12) found the try line again but was unfortunately unconverted. In the final 10 minutes, Wellingborough scored again to end the game at 17-24.
Greyhound travel to Towcester Roses Ladies next weekend (18/11/18) to see if they can stay top of the table in the 6th game of the league.
Stand out moments:
Kirsty Harrison carrying 2 or more Wellingbrough for well over 5 metres single handedly in a maul.
Beth Jones fierce determination to get through Wellingborough’s line with great attcking positioning.
Carly Phillips first try of the year as she barged through many of Wellingborough’s defence.
Every single player for managing to tackle and take down the biggest side we’ve come across.
