This Sunday saw first place Greyhound face off against second place Tewkesbury. The 2 teams have battled it out on many occasions resulting in wins on both sides. Unfortunately due to a shortage of numbers from Tewkesbury, the game kicked off 12 a-side.
Tewkesbury, who won the toss, started strong getting in a quick early score from the kick off. Tewkesbury, very at ease with a 12’s game, exploited the gaps in Greyhound’s line putting their centre through, with the home side left with little to do but scramble back to defend without success. Tewkesbury were unable to add the extras leaving it 0-5.
The first half continued with little possession for the home side. Greyhound had spells which looked as though they could produce a try, however Tewkesbury put the backline under pressure forcing errors and turning over possession. The home side fought on ferociously in defence, putting in some huge tackles and a try saving chase down from Carly Whent saw the score at 0-26 at the break.
Greyhound came back firing in the second half and with a great passage of play, winger Whent managed to make the break scoring between the posts, unfortunately unable to add the extras. Tewkesbury replied with another score of their own.
The Greyhound’s dug in and closed down some strong attacking play from Tewkesbury, showing again why their defensive line is one of the strongest in the league, but unable to capitalise on the possession they had, the game finished 5-33.
Captain’s comments – Jennie Lightowler
This wasn’t really the game we wanted to play, we’re a 15’s team, so to play the full game without our full pack on the pitch wasn’t ideal. The girls played their socks off and the second half showed that where we kept the score to a try each.
Number 8, Carly Phillips was excellent today and definitely returning to form after having a baby. Our front row (Claire Higginson, Jo Woolley, Sintija Ziraka) were also outstanding I can’t fault their determination and work rate. Everyone played well, it just wasn’t our game today.
We’ve got Banbury away next Sunday which is another big game for us, the girls are raring to go though and definitely will be going out with something to prove after a disappointing result today.
