Greyhound Ladies 19 – 15 Banbury Belles 16/9/18

Sunday 16th September saw Greyhound Ladies taking on Banbury Belles at Hereford City Sports Club. The match saw one of our sponsors, Zoe Wright from The Real Birth Company (pictured), presented with a match shirt before the game began from Jen Lightowler (captain) and Jo Woolley (vice-captain).
Greyhound and Banbury have met many times in National Championship Midlands 2 South with wins and losses for both sides. With this in mind, we knew it was going to be a hard, tough game from the beginning and a great game to get us in the mood for the rest of the season!
The game started with an early try from Bonnie Smith, playing at 12, under the posts which she also converted as she broke through their defensive line and found the right gap. From then on Banbury played with real force and determination, putting pressure on our defence with their fantastic counter rucking but didn’t stop Bonnie Smith crossing the line again but was unfortunately disallowed for being held up. However, a penalty was conceded on their 5 metre line and hooker Jo Woolley took full advantage of the location with a timely quick penalty, whilst Banbury were contesting the decision, took the ball over the line to make the score 12-0. In the final minutes of the first half, Banbury kicked a penalty and got their first points on the board, ending the half 12-3.
In the second half, Banbury built up momentum and managed to play more in Greyhound’s half than they had in the first half. A Banbury try came after many minutes of great defence from Greyhound who must’ve defended over 10 phases inside their 22 which was also converted, making the score 12-10. Banbury continued their run of good luck by scoring another try not long after from a fantastic run from their winger and centre which was unconverted (12-15). Greyhound then dug deep, knowing they needed to score another try, which came from a great run from Sarah Bevan (1st game) and Molly Harrison, who shipped it out to Georgina Evans who scored under the posts, which was converted by Bonnie Smith to end the game 19-15.
Greyhound ladies really showed how much they wanted to win this game and how much their technique and teamwork had come on since last season, thanks to coach Pete Williams. With new women joining all the time, we can only hope that the team will go from strength to strength. Our next game will be away to Cheltenham Civil Service on 7th October.
Stand out moments:

Sarah Bevan’s fantastic input at 10 with great knowledge and runs for her first game for Greyhound.

Bonnie Smith being the target of Banbury centres massive tackles which saw her soaring through the air on more than one occasion.

Sintija Ziraka putting in some of the biggest tackles I’ve seen for a while, she will be renamed the tackle machine
