Greyhound Ladies RFC welcomed Dursley Ladies RFC to Hereford City Sports on Sunday 21st October in their second home game of the season. Greyhound came into the game on a high after winning their past 3 matches but knew they had key players missing through injury.
Greyhound kicked off the match at 3pm which saw Dursley ship the ball out to the wing and they quickly scored their first try, followed by a conversion. Shortly after Dursley scored again under the posts and converted making the score 0-14. Greyhound then made some position changes and bought on some new players to try and strengthen their defence. After many minutes of back and forward balls between the teams and some run away players on both sides, Greyhound’s Emma Downes (12) scored their first try of the game, with an unsuccessful conversion. To Dursley’s credit, they did have some excellent defensive play with fantastic ruck techniques and jackling which stopped Greyhound from progressing.
The second half saw another quick try from Dursley from their opposite winger with a conversion (5-21). Greyhound then really stepped up, after more substitutions in the interval and fought back hard, putting in some big tackles and defensive strategies. A hard-worked try shortly followed from Bonnie Smith (9) out wide making it 10-21. Tiredness and poor decisions led to several penalties and too many scrums from both teams, resulting in a final play scrum, won by Greyhound, which saw Carly Whent (14) sprinting through Dursley’s defence to end the game 17-21, after a great conversion from Bonnie Smith.
Greyhound Ladies would like to thank Dursley Ladies for a great testing match and are now looking forward to taking on Wellingborough Ladies on 11th November away.
Stand out moments:
Bonnie Smith with some amazing break throughs and taking on many players single handedly
Self-proclaimed flag girl, Natalie Hughes-Burton making an impressive tackle which was remarked by the sidelines
Cheryl Williams, Abbie Roberts, Beth Jones and Alys Probert making their debut appearance on the field and putting in a great performance!
Definitely need to work on our 22 drop outs…
