Cheltenham Civil Service Ladies 24 – 40 Greyhound Ladies 7/10/18

After a fortnights break, Greyhound Ladies travelled to Cheltenham Civil Service for the third game of the league. Cheltenham have been going from strength to strength in recent years so we knew that we were in for a tough game Sunday, especially considering Cheltenham were fielding a team of 21 to our 17.
Greyhound kicked off and were met with a strong defence from Cheltenham but luckily we found their gaps with Claire Higginson (prop) going over the line for a try near touch which was unconverted. Another 2 tries from Greyhound quickly followed from Georgina Evans (full back) and Emma Downes (centre) which were break through tries through Cheltenham’s defence, to be converted by Bonnie Smith (fly half). It should be noted that Zoe Whittal (wing) and Bonnie Smith had disallowed tries in the first half. The second half was concluded with a try from centre, Carly Whent, which was converted, leaving the score at 0-26 to Greyhound.
Cheltenham made a superb come back in the second half after some game changing substitutions saw them attacking our back line with force we hadn’t seen previously in the game. This really tested us as we had become complacent in our score and our defence weakened opening the door for 4 tries and 2 conversions before we finally switched back on (24-26). Whilst chipping away at their defence with numerous rucks and shipping the ball out wide, Carly Whent sprinted through the line to score with a conversion making it 24-33. Kirsty Harrison made an outstanding impression for her first game showing great determination and tackling/rucking ability meaning she’s one to watch in the future. Cheltenham didn’t give up though and came back fighting but fortunately in the last minutes of the game Carly Whent made a break and sprinted through to the try line leaving others in her dust (converted 24-40) concluding the game.
Greyhound Ladies are top of the league in Women’s Challenge Midlands South 2 division after 3 games and welcome Dursley to Hereford City Sports on Sunday 21st October 3pm kick off, which co-insides with a pitch up and play for girls looking to play rugby from clubs around the county; a great showcase for girls and women in rugby!
Stand out moments:
Carly Whent’s amazing sprinting to score another hat-trick (the photos of her last try are amazing!)
Kirsty Harrison’s fantastic contribution to her first game (maybe not against her own players, sorry Jen!)
Zoe Whittal’s try that wasn’t a try as she caught it out wide off a Cheltenham foot and came storming down the wing.
Bonnie Smith’s on-point kicking increasing our lead with all the conversions she’s getting.
